November Was Rough On O.C. Hotels
In the month of November hotels throughout Orange County saw room rates fall 10% in a year and saw 41% of rooms remain empty.

O.C. Commercial Construction Down 33%
In 2009 Orange County’s non-residential construction fell to the lowest level in 14 years.
The estimated value of building permits of offices, hotels and other non-residential structures totaled $951 million, which is down 33.7% from 2008 and nearly 2/3 below the level of Orange County building in 2006. This is the lowest level since 1995.

O.C. Developer Opens World’s Tallest Building
On January 4th Dubai real estate developer Emaar officially opened the largest building in the world. At the peak of the American housing boom Emaar lost $1.6 billion by buying Orange County homebuilder John Laing in 2006. Currently Laing is being liquidated in bankruptcy court.

2009 Marks O.C. Homebuilding’s Worst Year

Orange County builders recorded their first up month of new home sale contracts in October, which followed 13 straight months of annual sales declines.

O.C. Ranks 4th In Number of Construction Jobs Lost
Amongst California’s largest metropolitan areas Orange County lost the 4th highest for number of construction jobs lost in the last year. In the last year Orange County alone lost 12,400 construction jobs.

Local Homebuilder Has Productive Quarter
For the first time in three years local homebuilder Standard Pacific Homes came out of the red. They reported a net loss of $23.8 million during the third quarter which was 94% smaller than the year before – although slightly bigger than the previous quarter.

16 hotels in Orange County and 307 statewide have been foreclosed upon or are in default of their loan obligations.
In January 9 hotels in Orange County closed compared to one the year before. Last month there were 1,823 rooms in default when there was only 238 last year.
